DL 1: "The River" Analysis

1987 and 1988:  “If I Baptize you,” the preacher said, “you’ll be able to go to the Kingdom of Christ. You’ll be washed in the river of suffering, son and you’ll go by the deep river of life. Do you want that?”

1989: The boy in the river glanced at the old man quickly and raised his fist. “Believe Jesus of the devil!” he cried, “Testify to one or the other!”

1990: The same blood that makes this River red, made that leper clean, made that blind man stare, made that dead man leap! You people with trouble,” he cried, “lay it in that River of Blood, lay in it that River of Pain, and watch it move away toward the Kingdom of Christ.”

1991: He gave one low cry of pain and indignation. Then he heard a shout and turned his head and saw something like a giant pig bounding after him, shaking a red and white club and shouting. He plunged under once and this time, the waiting current caught him like a long gentle hand and pulled him swiftly forward and down. For an instant he was overcome with surprise: then since he was moving quickly and knew that he was getting somewhere, all his fury and fear left him.

1992: “It it’s this River of Life you want to lay your pain in, then come up,” the preacher said, “and lay your sorrow here. But don’t be thinking this is the last of it because this old red river don’t end here.

1993: Then he lifted his head and arms and shouted, “Listen to what I got to say, you people! There ain’t but one river and that’s the River of Life, made out of Jesus’ Blood. That’s the river you have to lay your pain in, in the River of Faith, in the River of Life, in the River of Lover, in the rich red river of Jesus’ Blood, you people!”

1994: “I know from my own self-experience,” a woman’s mysterious voice called from the knot of people, “I know from it that this preacher can heal. My eyes have been opened! I testify to Jesus!”

1995: He shut his eye and heard her voice from a long way away, as if he were under the river and she on top of it. She shook his shoulder. “Harry,” she said, leaning down and putting her mouth to his ear, “tell me what he said.” She pulled him into a sitting position and he felt as if he had been drawn up from under the river. “Tell me,” she whispered and her bitter breath covered his face.

1996: “Yes,” the child said, and thought, I won’t go back to the apartment then, I’ll go under the river.

1997: He held him under while he said the words of Baptism and then he jerked him up again and looked sternly at the gasping child. Bevel’s eyes were dark and dilated. “You count now,” the preacher said, “You didn’t even count before.”

1998: His shoes were still damp and he began to think about the river. Very slowly, his expression changed as if he were gradually seeing appear what he didn’t know he’d been looking for. Then all of a sudden he knew what he wanted to do.

1999: his voice grew soft and musical. “All the rivers come from that one River and go back to it like if was the ocean sea and it your believe, you can lay your pain in that River and get rid of it because that’s the River that was made to carry sin. It’s a River full of pain itself, pain itself, moving toward the Kingdom of Christ, to be washed away, slow, you people, slow as this here old red water river round my feet.

2000: He intended not to fool with preachers any more but to Baptize himself and to keep on going this time until he found the Kingdom of Christ in the river. He didn’t mean to waste any more time. He put his head under the water at once and pushed forward.

2001: “I seen you cure a woman oncet!” a sudden high voice shouted from the hump of people. “Seen that woman git up and walk out straight where she had limped in!”

2002: “This belonged to my great grandmamma. I wouldn’t part with it for nothing on earth.” And every word of it the gospel truth.” She turned the next page and read him the name: “The Life of Jesus Christ for Readers Under Twelve.” Then she read him the book.

2003: “If you ain’t come for Jesus, you ain’t come for me. If you just come to see can you leave your pain in the river, you ain’t come for Jesus. You can’t leave your pain in the river,” he said. “I never told nobody that.” He stopped and looked down at his knees.

2004: “Tuesday I was in Fortune Lake, next day in Ideal, Friday me and my wife drove to Lulawillow to see a sick man there. Them people didn’t see no healing, “he said and his face burned redder for a second. “I never said they would.”

2005:  This old red suffering stream des on, you people, slow to the Kingdom of Christ. This old red river is good to Baptize in, good to lay your faith in, good to lay your pain in, but it ain’t this muddy water here that saves you.”

Distance Learning Assignment 2: Video Response

 1. What is the Divine Sense of Humor?
Humor means the ability to see through things. A person lacks a sense of humor if he cannot see through things. A person who has a sense of humor can look through a window easily. The world to them is like a window. It is transparent. The words he hears and sees mean something else to them. Some people have a sense of humor and others do not.

2. How does it relate to the class discussions about sign and symbol?
When he talks about certain gestures such as a handshake or a kiss, it can be a sign and or a symbol. When you shake hands with someone it can be physical and spiritual. When you shake hands with someone there’s a sign of physical and spiritual connection because it represents a symbol of friendship. Shaking hands by yourself is nothing. A kiss to someone is a sign physically and presents affection or love towards someone if that person returns the gesture. Fulton talks about Einstein and what E=MC2 means. He has a sense of humor. It is not just that equation. To him, E (energy) equals M (mass) times C (Speed of light) squared. Fulton gives other examples of how the little things that we see represent more. A sunset is a revelation of the beauty of God. Not just a sign meaning that its morning. A snowflake is not just a little white spec that we see around Christmas time. It is a tell tale of the purity of God. In class we talked about how a sign just gives you a minimum direction of what it’s saying. A symbol is a deeper meaning of what it actually is. It relates to what Archbishop Fulton Sheen mentioned about seeing things for more than what an object or word is or does on the surface. We should see it for something more.

"The Man Without A Face" Essay

The Man Without a Face is about a young boy named Charles and the close developmental bond he creates with the town’s outcast. The town does not accept Mr. McCloud because of his facial appearance. He is known for many reasons; reasons and facts that are not credible and or only tell half of the truth. Charles experiences so much negative pressure from his mom and sisters about attending boarding school. Throughout the course of the movie, Charles starts to gain a sense of security with Mr.McCloud helping him pass his entrance exam for boarding school. Charles and Mr.McCloud cultivate a comforting and emotional relationship through the course of the movie.
At the beginning of the movie, Charles is in his own dream of becoming who he wants to be and a hero from being in the military. Though it was just a dream, Charles wants to be accepted into a prominent all boys school in Connecticut. With different accusations of what truly happened to his dad it’s very difficult for him, because he loved his dad very much. Being the only male in the house between his two sisters and mother, he feels inferior to them. Charles uses his anger and negative words in order for him to feel like he is important. Going to the school will allow him to be free and discover who he is as a person.
We first encounter Mr.McCloud after a heated argument he gets into with his mother and sister. With anger and hate still enraged in him, Charles decides to slash his mom’s tires in despite. While doing this, Mr.McCloud sees Charles doing this to the car. He looks in disbelief and this is where Charles sees him for the first time. He was startled and looked scared because he felt as if Mr. McCloud would tell on him. But he did not and left without saying a word.            When he gets stuck in the rain, McCloud helps him and this starts a bond between the two of them. Lesson number one for Charles was for him to dig a three by three triangle outside. He does not understand how this is going to help, but it will in the long run. McCloud gives him strict rules as to following his way or the highway. Everything is a blur for Charles at the moment. Then he decides to critique the essay that he “wrote” but in actuality plagiarized. This moment shows how their relationship together will start off a little rough with out knowing if things will get better.
The next few days roll around and Charles starts to like Mr.McCloud, even though he does not understand how it’s going to help him with his test. Mr. McCloud starts to open up to Charles about his life and who he really is. We learn why Mr.McCloud does not have a face because he was in a really bad car accident and dispels all the rumors for Charles. For Charles’ school entrance exam, McCloud introduces Charles to geometric theorems and poetry. As much as Charles hates it, through McCloud expressing the importance of reading and acting through books and poetry he develops a sense of liking to it. Their relationship at this point started to turn into a friendship. Still with all of the rumors flying around about Mr.McCloud, one of the rumors came up in Charles mind of if McCloud does pornography as an actually job. Charles’ clever question leads into the question during another tutoring session. He decides to ask McCloud about sexual attraction, leading into his question about him working in pornography as a job. McCloud laughs at this and is not surprised at the question at all. He leads Charles into a room with all these paintings and is surprised by the fact that he is actually an artist along with a tutor as well. This scene helps us understand who McCloud really is for our own eyes to see, instead of believing what other people say.
Towards the end of the movie, the emotional connection of McCloud and Charles relationship becomes evident. Through Gloria, his older sister, Charles finds out that his dad died in a psychological facility. It really hurt Charles and he felt betrayed by everyone in his family. The first person he goes to is McCloud because he feels like he is the only one he can trust. The comfort and support hat Charles received from McCloud was what he really needed. He stays the night with him, but then gets taken away by the police because of the misunderstanding that the police and his mother thought when he spent the night over McCloud’s house. It gets taken to court because the attorneys manipulate McCloud’s past from the tragic car accident with the young boy. The lawyers were able to win the fight and Charles was not allowed to speak, see or even write to McCloud anymore.
Time goes on, and Charles took the entrance exam for boarding school and got accepted. While in boarding school he gets an unexpected letter from McCloud telling him about all the things that had happened during the trial and his restrictions from him. At the end of the movie, we watch Charles in boarding school as he matures into a young man graduating from school. Little did we know that McCloud was actually there during graduation as Charles notices at the end and waves to him to say goodbye. The movie itself was enjoyable. Every situation that happened between Charles and McCloud developed into something more and each of them learned personal things about each other. Power took over Charles. Being with McCloud helped him to satisfy his heart and desires, regardless of the difficult situations at hand. Charles’ relationship with McCloud will always be with him even with the constraints put between them.

Unit II Definitions and Knowlege Question

1.     Science: The study of certain structures through physical and natural changes on earth.
2.     Evidence: Information and or materials used to prove that something is real or factual.
3.     Fact: Something known to have existed or not happen.
4.     Truth: Something that is real.
5.     Value: An interest in something that a person believes in and supports.
6.     Logic: a type of thinking that includes reasoning with specific laws that go along with it.

I think that all things are not known in the same way because we are all not that same. If we were, everyone would have the same way of thinking and feeling. Certain things that we know, people interpret differently. Such as logic, everyone approaches logic his or her own way. Having knowledge to know something takes discovery. However, everyone’s journey to discovering the real truth is unique and different.

What is Knowledge? Essay

Knowledge is something that everyone has. We think that we know things through preconceived notions and things that are told to us. My definition of knowledge is from a different perspective. More so my definition is pretty simple, an answer to a question. But it is more than that. Discovering the truth for us to understand something is real knowledge. In life, we are faced and confronted with many things in our lives. A successful life involves the basic needs in order to live. However, then you are confronted with the ability of knowledge and its challenges. Certain questions that were presented in class made me think about how I know the answer to an effortless answer. Clearly I was wrong.
How do I know that I am an African American? This question is really interesting to me because it would make me research my family history and trace it all the way back to my roots, Africa. I do know that my grandparents from way back were slaves in Africa. I don’t know where exactly but from my parents sharing this information, I trust them. My relatives just like a lot of other blacks experienced the clique life of a slave. Controlled by a plantation owner, harsh life etc. So, I do know that I descend from Africa. I have always wondered if I am not one hundred African-American but another ethnicity. I also found out that my great-grandmother was from the Cherokee tribe. Wanting to know if I am part of another ethnicity will include me really learning about my heritage, which will enable some closure in my life. But for now, it will still be bewilderment to me.
